Shelbourne v UCD

SSE Airtricity League – First Division

Tolka Park – April 21st – KO 7.45pm

Friday night will see UCD cross the city to Tolka Park to meet Shelbourne in the ninth series of the SSE Airtricity League, First Division. Kick-off is scheduled for 7.45pm.

Last weekend, Shelbourne travelled to the Midlands to take on Alan Mathews’ Longford Town. Despite going ahead with a third minute goal from Dayle Rooney, the Reds finished the game pointless after, having failed to defend two free kicks and conceding a penalty. Shelbourne were denied two penalties, the second of which, late in the game being a particularly baffling decision, being seen by everyone in the stadium except the one that counted.

UCD’s game last weekend, ended in a draw, ‘College’ coming back from being two-nil down after half an hour.

Shelbourne’s result dropped them back to fourth position in the league, while UCD’s are in second place following their draw.

Both of these sides failed to progress in the EA Sports Cup during the week, UCD going out on penalties to Dundalk, while Shelbourne, who used the game to give much needed game time to some fringe players and those coming back from injury, went down 2-0 to Longford Town.

Owen Heary discussing last Saturday’s league game with Longford, has this to say “We started quite well in the game, scored early and then conceded a silly set piece – straight ball into the box that we should have defended. We go in at half time 2-1 down from a penalty incident. Second half we have a go. We get caught again from a free  kick – but in the game itself, we should have got one of the penalties, at least, which would have brought us back into the game but, I can’t fault them performance wise, I just think that we switched off at times which allowed Longford back into the game.  The free kick was the killer blow – a straight ball into the box, should have been defended a lot better.  Second goal, it’s a mistake – we pass it back and Deano [Delany] comes rushing out and we give away a penalty.

Overall a disappointing result, but performance wise, it wasn’t the worst performance. If we can keep putting in performances, I’ll be happy, but we need to stop the silly mistakes that are conceding goals.”

And on Friday’s game -  “It’s important that we go into this game feeling, and believing, that we can win the game. We rested a number of players [in the EA Cup game] keeping the focus on Friday’s game. We were able to use that game to give playing time to some of the players coming back, [giving] ninety minutes to a number of players, David O’Leary, Chris Lyons, Niall Lanigan just from injury”  [all of whom are now available for selection].

Shelbourne have no suspensions for this game and manager Owen Heary’s absentee list is somewhat reduced - Dylan Kavanagh remaining on the injury list, while Niall Lanigan and  Aidan Collins come back into contention.  Though he has returned to training, Mikey Murphy is unlikely to return to action this week and is listed as ‘doubtful’.
