Shelbourne v Finn Harps

SSE Airtricity League – First Division

Tolka Park – May 11th – KO 7.45 pm

Following Shelbourne’s trip to the Brandywell Stadium on Monday last for their ill-fated EA Sports Cup Quarter Final with Derry City, attention is switched back to the Airtricity League First Division and Friday’s home tie against Finn Harps. Kick-off at the Drumcondra venue on Friday is scheduled for 7.45pm.

Shelbourne’s last league game was against UCD at Tolka Park. The first half of the game was a half of few chances as both sides cancelled out one another. The second half started in the same vein until James English latched onto a cross-field ball from James Brown, which he hammered to the roof of the Students’ net. After a number of chances for each side and with the clock running down, UCD’s Gary O’Neill had a shot from outside the area, which was deflected off the heel of a defender into the net. Ninety minutes up and the score 1-1, surely game over. Not so, UCD’s leading scorer, Georgie Kelly received a second yellow card as he was adjudged to have dived in the Shelbourne area and was sent for an early shower. The result was that UCD increased their lead. at the top of the table, over the chasing group.

While this was happening at Tolka Park, this Friday’s opponents, Finn Harps, had Drogheda United as visitors. Drogheda scored after 25 minutes and went into the half-time break ahead.  Harps came out a different team in the second half and within ten minutes were on level terms, Keith Cowan having scored. Ciaran O’Connor scored for the home side just ten minutes later; Final score Harps 2-1 Drogheda.

Harps were at home again on Bank Holiday Monday, in a re-scheduled game against Galway United. In a game of little in the way of goalmouth action and the sides cancelling each other out, the game seemed to be heading for a scoreless draw, when in the dying minutes, Jesse Devers received a lobbed ball from Paddy McCourt and held off the defender before firing a looping half-volley at goal to win the game for his side.

These two wins for Harps have propelled them into second place in the league table on 20 points, with Shelbourne just behind them, sharing an 18 points total with Drogheda and Galway.

Shelbourne played Harps in Ballybofey at the start of the season and shared the points in what was a keen, competitive game on a difficult surface – David O’Sullivan’s goal just before half-time cancelling out Michael O’Connor’s score after just sixteen minutes.

The sides did not meet competitively last season

Shelbourne manager Owen Heary will have a full squad to select from for this game, with the exception of Aidan Collins (shoulder injury)
