Having joined Cardiff City in the summer of 1998, Kelly returned to Dublin in 2000 and joined St.Patricks Athletic. After three successful years with the Inchicore club, he joined Bohemians for the 2003 campaign.
Kelly joined Longford Town on loan from Bohemians in the mid-season transfer window of 2005. Being released by Bohemians at the end of that season, he signed a contract to play with Longford. Kelly signed a new contract with Longford Town in January 2008..
Honoured by Ireland at 'B' level during the 96/97 season, Shay has also played in goal for Offaly in senior Gaelic football.
