Drogheda United v Shelbourne

SSE Airtricity League – First Div. Play-Off
United Park – October 5th – KO 7.45 pm

Friday night sees the start of the Play-Off series of games, to see who will fill that final place on offer in the Premier Division. Four clubs will be in the contest – that which finishes the Premier season in ninth place, Finn Harps (who finished second in the First Division), together with Shelbourne and Drogheda United (who finished third and fourth respectively in the First).

Drogheda and Shelbourne start the process this weekend, when they take part in the first play-off – over two games – Friday night at United Park and Monday night at Tolka Park. The winners over the two games will then play Finn Harps over two games, with the winner of that play-off playing the team that ends ninth in the premier, with the prize for that game being the final place available in the Premier Div.

Shelbourne travel up the MI to Drogheda for the first game on Friday, with kick-off scheduled for 7.45pm.

Drogheda will be looking to make a swift return to the higher league after just a single season in the first – and so repeat their feat of elevation to the Premier after one season down, which they achieved just two years ago. Prior to that, they had not tasted life in the First Division for fourteen seasons.

Shelbourne, on the other hand, have lingered in the lower division since they were demoted in 2007 – with the exception of 2012 and 2013. They will be hoping to get back to where they were before that demotion, to where they played all their football in the top league since the Free State League days 1921/22, with the exception of 1934/35 and 1935/46 (when they absented themselves) and 1985/86 and 1986/87 (in the First).

This season, Shelbourne and Drogheda United have met each other on four occasions, three in the league and in the second round of the EA (League) Cup. Two of the league games were drawn 1-1 (one each in Tolka and United Parks), with the third at Tolka was won by Drogheda, when Sean Brennan scored from a last-minute free kick. The EA Cup game was won (7-2) by Shelbourne (at home, back in April)

Shelbourne have Dave Mulcahy missing out through injury, while Greg Moorhouse is suspended for Friday’s game, having reached a count of five yellow cards.
